Our sinking and floating experiment!
In the water area this week the children have enjoyed testing out objects that sink and float. We decided to create our own experiment to test which items sink and which float. The children made their own predictions and Miss Jackson recorded them. The children were unsure at first as what sinking and floating meant. We then began talking about armbands and how they help us float in the water.
Firstly, we put a stone in the water. It sank to the bottom, after a lot of discussion the children decided it sank because it was heavy. We then put a feather in the water and it floated, we decided this was because it was light. We then put a silver ball in the water that had a hole in. After lots of observation we noticed that the ball floated but when we filled the hole with water it sank! This really got us thinking and we came up with fantastic explanations! Well done boys and girls, great thinking skills today and great problem solving!
