Children from Y3- Y6 learn Spanish at St Albert’s.
Year 1 and 2 have a non-statutory topic each term to begin to develop their vocabulary and interest in a foreign language.

Our approach to teaching Spanish is phonics-based. We teach sound by sound and we repeatedly focus upon the common letter sounds and combinations in Spanish. This focus helps pupils to quickly master correct pronunciation and accurate spelling. We habitually look for links between words we already know and new words. We habitually look for links with English. The focus is on ensuring spoken and written accuracy.

Spanish is taught weekly in 30 minute whole class lessons. Spanish is taught through stories, songs and rhymes following the objectives of the National Curriculum KS2 languages programme of study.

Spanish lessons provide opportunities for speaking and listening, with writing and some reading where relevant. Lessons are interactive and Spanish is spoken as much as possible and follow the Language Angels scheme of work.
