Maths Firefighter Visit!
Year 6 welcomed local firefighter Ged into St Albert’s. Ged gave the children a fascinating insight into what life is like as a firefighter and how important maths is in his job. From calculating how much water a fire engine can contain through using volume formula to calculating how many minutes firefighter’s breathing apparatus can last in a burning building we all realised how crucial maths is in this profession. The children also asked other maths based questions about temperature and even how much money Ged earns in a year!
Needless to say the children in Year 6 were inspired by the visit and we look forward to continuing to build our relationship with the local fire service department.
Jonny The Accountant Visits Year 2
Year 2 were thrilled to be visited by Jonny the accountant. He visited Year 2 in order to tell them all about how he uses maths in his job and how important it is in his everyday life. The children asked some brilliant questions then went onto practice their own accountancy skills to see what it is like to have a job in the world of finance.

Maths In London
Last month we (Year 6) had a lovely trip to London which included a lot of maths. We learnt that there are 33 pods on The London Eye and that the House of Lords has over 800 members. When we arrived at The Harry Potter World, we took pictures by the 9 3/4 platform and converted it to an improper fraction – 39/4. We also spent our money there and saw how much some of the things were. On the way home we calculated how long the journey was and how tall the buildings were such a Big Ben. It was amazing to see how much maths there is in the world around us! Alex

Community Visits
Year 1 recently enjoyed a community visit from Paul Magill. He showed the children how he uses maths in his job on a daily basis through measuring paint. Year 2 were also recently inspired by an accountant coming in to visit them to show how important numbers are that particular type of work. All of the other classes around school will also be enjoying visits shortly with a firefighter turning up to Year 6!
