Art and Design

At our school, we recognise that Art and Design plays a vital role in a broad and balanced curriculum. It provides every child with the opportunity to engage, explore, and express their ideas in creative and imaginative ways. Through art, children learn not only to develop practical skills but also to understand themselves and the wider world. We aim to equip our students with knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design.

Our vision is to ensure that all pupils:

  1. Develop Creativity and Self-Expression
We aim to nurture children’s natural curiosity and imagination, enabling them to experiment confidently with a wide variety of materials, tools, and techniques. We encourage them to take creative risks, embrace mistakes as part of the learning process, and celebrate originality.
  2. Acquire and Refine Skills
Our curriculum is carefully designed to build artistic skills progressively, from early mark-making and colour exploration in the early years, to increasingly complex techniques such as perspective, composition, sculpture, and digital media in upper primary. Pupils will learn to use formal elements of art — line, tone, colour, pattern, texture, shape, and form — as the foundation of their creative practice.
  3. Gain Cultural Awareness and Appreciation
We believe it is important for children to learn about the richness of art and design across history and cultures. Our pupils will study the work of artists, designers, architects, and craftspeople from different backgrounds, times, and places, making links between their own work and the wider artistic world. This not only deepens knowledge but also fosters respect, inclusion, and curiosity about cultural diversity. We also aim to visit local art galleries in Liverpool and when ever possible invite local artist into school.
  4. Build Critical Thinking and Evaluation Skills
Pupils will be taught to discuss and reflect on both their own creations and the work of others. Through structured evaluation, they will develop the language to articulate opinions, make informed choices, and recognise the impact of art and design on society and daily life.
  5. Promote Wellbeing and Personal Growth
Art and Design provides a space for mindfulness, resilience, and emotional expression. We recognise its role in supporting children’s mental wellbeing and building confidence. Collaborative projects also foster teamwork, communication, and a sense of shared achievement.
