MFL
At St. Albert’s, our vision for Modern Foreign Languages is to widen our pupils’ horizons and prepare them to thrive as global citizens. We have chosen to teach Spanish because it is a widely spoken, accessible language with strong phonics links, supporting children’s early language development.
In Key Stage 1, pupils begin their journey in Spanish by building strong foundations in speaking and listening, developing the confidence to understand and communicate simple ideas. In Key Stage 2, these skills are further developed through a focus on reading and writing, enabling pupils to broaden their vocabulary and deepen their understanding of the language.
We are committed to teaching Spanish in a multi-sensory and engaging way that includes and inspires all learners. Through songs, stories, games, and real-life contexts, children are encouraged to participate, enjoy learning, and build resilience. This is taught through the Language Angels scheme of work, following the National Curriculum KS2 languages programme of study.
The curriculum is carefully structured to build progressively from Year 1, revisiting and deepening prior knowledge while making meaningful links with other areas of learning. This approach ensures children can consolidate and embed their skills, enabling them to see language learning as purposeful, enjoyable, and rewarding.
